NA vs. EU bumpers
US and EU bumper collision specs are definitely different. Crash requirements are different between obstacles, offsets, etc.
Bottom line: US cars get fat bumpers unless the OEM wants to start doing things cleverly, but most won't because they'd rather put the money elsewhere. I've seen several EU Ford cars that I wondered why they weren't brought to the US (e.g. today's CD132 Mondeo, Puma). The answer I got was always the same: crash standards.
