Default searched but need more info about DIY maintenance

Hello,

I'm planning to do engine oil, oil filter, dust/pollen filter change on my A4 1.8tq myself. I don't have much experience with cars but trying to learn to maintain it myself. (Only thing I have done is replacing engine mount, bpv, and cracked rubber pipe, and those were easy enough)

## oil / oil filter change ##
So far, only step by step instruction I can find is

<a href="https://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng10.shtml">https://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng10.shtml</a>
<a href="http://www.fastaudi.net/a4/library/oilchange.html">http://www.fastaudi.net/a4/library/oilchange.html</a>

Both are for B5 A4, but I thinking it would be pretty much same thing.

1. Know any other write up? Maybe for B6?
2. Torque spec for filter is 15ft/lb?
3. Torque spec for oil drain plug is 22ft/lb? Or 36.9 ft/lb (50 Nm)?
4. Do you suggest going for oil filter from the bottom of the car, or from the top with coolant tank off?
5. I going to use a set of ramp therefore the car won't be level when I drain the oil. Any bad side in that?

## dust/pollen filter ##

I found a great post by Gumbo (Thanks!!)

<a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a4gen2/msgs/287395.phtml">https://forums.audiworld.com/a4gen2/msgs/287395.phtml</a>

Any other pointers, suggestions?

I just bought oil filter, drain plug and the air filter from dealer (all oem). Pretty excited... Sorry for long post! I appreciate any suggestions. Wish me luck!

Joe

Default I don't know how new your car is, but if this is the first time the oil is being changed

which it probably isn't since you are doing a pollen filter, but 15lbs on the oil filter is featherweight compared to how they come from the factory, I break it loose from the top without removing anything. My personal choice of oil is Mobil 1 0W 40. good stuff. As far as changing the oil, just drop the plastic shield under the engine, remember where all the screws go, and which ones go where. Key thing that noobs forget is that you don't need any special tools, some people have actually went out and bought a larger torx bit and broken loose the tranny drain plug. This is a standard hex for the oil drain plug. Other than that, it's straight forward for the oil change, just remember to prime the seal on the oil filter (put some oil on your finger and run it around the seal generously). Oh yeah, and spray the frame off afterwards to prevent any drips that may cause you to think you have a leak later on.

Default I've used ramps and jack stands. Ramps are eaiser if your car isn't lowered, but

I often had a really hard time getting the car up the ramps and really smoked the clutch a couple of times, hence I use the jack stands now. Plus with the jack stands, the car is more level, hence all the old oil drains out.

I've removed the filter from both the bottom or the top, with the coolant tank removed. You'll make a mess either way. If you remove the filter from the top, you can put some paper over the parts underneath the filter for the oil to drip on.

I changed my oil on Tuesday and added M1 15W50 and used the larger capacity 04 filter, part # V068 155 561 B.

Good luck.

Default I had asked for the larger filter but was told it would interfere with warranty.

I'm wondering if there is something slighty internally different with the new 1.8T's?

Default Your parts guy was just playing by the book. Fact is,

circulating more oil through your engine can only be good for it.

Default I just prefer ramp because I feel safer.

I think I'm gonna try bigger filter next time since I got the part already and I'm too lazy to go back and exchange it =)

Thanks for the advise

Any ideas on those torque specs? 15 lb on oil filter sounds too weak, no?
