Default There seems to be alot of controversy over which intake is better recently (long) ...

stock vs. larger 3.0 inlet vs. cone type intake. It seems that the stock inlet is too restricted to be optimum, the cone gets the best flow but the ambient temperature is too high to be more effective, and the larger 3.0 inlet flows better than stock but still gets too hot from interference from the top corner of the motor. Common sense tells me that the 3.0 inlet would be best due to improved air flow and coming from outside the air would be coolest. Does the interference from the engine really make it so much hotter that it isn't as effective as the stock one? I have felt the stock one and it gets really hot anyway so I can't imagine the larger one getting that much hotter. What really matters anyway is the temp of the air inside and the amount of flow into the intake. What about setups like the carbonino that have a heatshield? On the TT show they claimed that the intake stays cold even though the ambient is hotter. Comments?

The carbonio stays cold because carbon fiber disperses heat very quickly

Default did you see the recent post about the 3.0 intake?

he said it felt quicker for a while, but then it actually felt slower than it was with the 1.8 intake, he opened his hood and felt the tube... said it was really hot. apparently it works for some amount of time, but then it does get too hot to be effective

Default I wonder about wrapping it with some heat reflective material or notching out the ...

corner so that it doesn't touch

Default It's not tight on mine. However, the dimple to clear the 3.0L engine is...

...aerodynamic. A "notch" would create flow disrupting turbulence. A possibility is to move the dimple forward about 1/2" to 3/4" to clear the cam chain cover on the 1.8T. However, I'm starting to learn the temps may still be better with the 3.0L intake duct. I've got to mount a few more thermisters (LM135's) and take some more differential readings.

Default It wouldn't really matter how hot the bos is if the air going in is

15 degrees hotter than the air that would be going into the stock bos. Sure, the box will have some heating effect, but it would prolly be negligible if the air was already way hotter. My question is does the heat shield keep the air around the intake cooler or does it just keep the box cooler? Did you notive a difference after you intalled it? I remember you posted when you installed it but I was wondering now that you have had some time to use it.
