Default Break in consensus?

Probably within the next month or so I will be the proud owner of an 04 or 05 Brilliant Red A4 1.8t 6-speed Ultrasport, and I want to make sure I break the motor in properly. I've heard so many different techniques, including:

1. The Saturn guy's method
2. Drive it gently with occassional slow bursts to redline (seat rings)
3. Beat the **** out of it
4. It's already broken in, just dirve it normally

I'm leaning towards 1 or 2 right now, I know 2 has always worked find for for my family.

I've also read that with an Audi motor, you should not change the oil for the first time until around 5k miles - is this true? What's the reason?

Another question - anny other parts in the car that would require a specific break-in procedure? I already intend on being fairly easy on the car for the first 1k miles or so for this reason.

TIA!

Default i limit my revs but vary my speeds, and i increase as the milage does

i.e. limit to 4000 RPMS til about 300-400 miles, then limit to 5000 RPMS til about 700 miles, then take it to redline gradually on occasion if you wish to up til about 1000 miles...then you're broken in...the key is to vary speeds, because keeping it at low speed or at highway only speed won't help to break in the car correctly...varying the speed is the key...

Default Themanual will come with a reccomended breakin procedure...(more)

I would follow that. It is coming directly from the source. If you want to try some other stuff after you have completed the manual's breakin instructions feel free. It just seems stupid to ignore their advice.

I would ignore all reccomnedations given to you that vary from that even if it comes from the sales guy at the dealer. I have recieved some of the most hilarious advice from sales people before. Then again some are right on the money.

There are too many tall tales about breakin.

Default drive it like you stole it

j/k

but like turbosport said, vary it up, and dont do anything real whacky until about 1,200m.

As far as the oil goes, I havent heard anything solid on what it came with, and I changed my first one at 2500.

Should I also follow the manual on oil change intervals? God knows that was accurate

Default You have a very good point....

Being an engineer, it drives me nuts when technical information is unavailable to me. I wish I have a few phone numbers in the Audi design group don't you?

Default Stay off the turbo for about first 1k

Fact- you will wear out your engine quicker, until the rings seat properly, microscopic particles can pass with the higher compression and scor the cylinder walls. However, use various speeds and also avoid highway(consistant speeds)driving if you can. (If you are leasing then don not worry)
Chg oil every 5k in the 1.8T

Default hold off on the oil change until first scheduled, from what i have read and heard audi uses special

oil for the car and its vital that it circulates in the engine for the first 5k. do a search in fact archives i'm sure you can get the whole story.

as for the break in, its as simple as this...

audi tells you to do something, they know best. listen to the dealer if they tell you something and you follow their directions and you harm the car its their *** that gets the issues in long run. you just paid all this money for the car so be gentle on it until the reco break in period is over. generally 1500k. why chance it...

thats all i have to say about that. good luck and enjoy
