Default Brought my car in this morning for an oil change

Get a call, "Your brake pads need replacing ($200) and your "Transmission is leaking coolant (i think thats what they said) ($600).

Luckly my extended warrenty covers the Transmission.

Is it possible to bring your car in for one thing and not get sucked into another charge?

Default It's a double edged sword.

When your car is in, it's going to get a look over. Let's say your brakes are close to being gone, and no one tells you. You drive off and a few weeks later start grinding up the rotors. Now you're pissed because no one told you and now you need rotors. If I do tell you you need brakes, now you just think I am trying to rip you off. I find it better to be the guy who is "trying to rip someone off" because it's much easier to say I told you so later on.

True that. Plus you always have an option to say no to fixing it

Yeah... Possible if under the warranty. They will not "offer" to help if you're still under the 50K.

Default I always ask to see the part that is worn out.

If the tech can see it, then so can I. On my beater car, they told me the CV boots needed replacing and offered to do them for $600 (on a 95 Civic LX no less!). I asked to see them and they said the car was already off the lift. Since I was pissed that they tried to charge so much, I said "fine, since it's off the lift, give my my keys, I'm leaving." I took the car elsewhere and had them show me the CV boots which were indeed cracked.

If you know a thing or two about cars, you can ask to see what's broken, or see the leak, or the brake pads, or whatever and make the determination for yourself.

Default Funny story....

A while back I was working in an independant shop. At the time, the Mazda Escorts were known to break their rear coil springs. They would break right at the base so people never noticed as it wasn't like it broke in the middle and caused the car to sag. We had a guy and his wife in and they had an Escort. Both rear springs were broken. At this place, it was customary to show the customer what was wrong with their car (which I think is not a bad idea at all, but doesn't always help.) So the wife was all for fixing it. The husband argued and said no, they are supposed to look like that, it's like that on both sides. I asked him if all 4 tires were flat, would that be how they were supposed to be, since they were all flat. He also argued with me that the loose tie rods could just be tightened up. I felt bad for his wife.

Default haha, that is funny, "but they both are the same!"

Unless they're both broken. I guess they didn't get the springs fixed?

You can't just tighen up loose tie rod ends, they wear out, you have to replace the tie rods. That comes with either age or excessive turning of the wheel while the car isn't moving (like in parallel parking for people who have to inch forward and backward to try and get their car in the spot).

Default Yeah I know.

And if I had a dollar for every time some one asked me to just "tighten them up" I'd have a few more cars and bikes in the garage.

Default what i do

between the srevice intervals, i take my car to an independent shop for oil changes. they look over my car. if there is any leaks or worn out parts the car goes back to Audi for repair under warranty. it helps that my brother works at the shop. i also do this with my wife's XC V70.
