Default advice needed on what dealership wants to replace

So the other day my "Check Engine" (the yellow one) light came on. Since I was up for my 55k mile service anyway (1.8T 98.5 model), I brought the car in and mentioned it to the dealer.

They looked at it and from what I can make of the explanation, there is something wrong with one of the control units for the ignition. It is misfiring on cylinder 3 and they want to replace what is essentially a "coil pack" that sends sparks to different cylinders for $625.

They said this didn't necessarily need to be done because the light keeps going on and off, but it might need to happen sooner rather than later.

Can someone explain what they are saying here and:

1) Should I get this done?

2) Is $625 reasonable for this?

3) What happens if I don't get it done?

I'm on a student budget now so trying to save every little penny.

Default Well, if it is "Just" the ignition coil that needs to be replaced...buy your own and do it.

no special tools required and takes only a few minutes.

Sounds like the ignition amplifier, which is not a cheap part.

Default The best thing to due first , is switch the coil pack from 3 to 1, and 1 to 3. If the Missfire is

now on 1, just replace the coil pack. If it is still on 3 it could just be the spark plug or worst case the ignition amplifier or wiring

Default Are my posts invisiable?

Your car has an ignition amplifier. Everyone else is saying coil pack because their cars don't have one and they aren't familar with a B5 car. The amplifier is a common failure on those cars.

Default It will continue to misfire. <edit>

The older cars like yours did not shut down the injector in a cylinder when it is misfiring like the newer cars can do. So, if you have no spark being applied to a cylinder, you will still have fuel being sprayed in that cylinder. Raw, unburned fuel isn't healthy for an engine let alone your cat. I would say fix it.

If you're concerned about the price, ask for the parts and labor break down. Like I said, I know the part isn't cheap.

Default curious...

so when was that switched over to our current system? was it in the B6 platform, or when the 1.8T changed part way through the B5 line up?
