Let's continue to beat the anti-FWD drum.

I love my Audi, even though it's FWD it can still smoke your Cobra. : )

http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=4&article_id=3888&p age_number=1</a

276 RWHP vs. 300FWHP.
I have the weight transfer advantage and weigh right at 3500lb with a full tank and me aboard. I know my 3.0 Quattro is heavier what about the non-Q?
I unfortunately have never run mine in the quarter. But Car and Driver put down 13.5 back in July of 2001. I've seen high 12's at a Fun Ford Weekend even out of other guys.
What kind of quarter mile times you running?
I see where your going, but rather than going by some guy hating on FWD's and a twenty year old FWD Audi 100, it's better to go wtih today's car's. I really am not having an issue with my FWD and the power it's putting down other than some wheelspin. I haven't gone to the track. But even with the Stage 1+ and some extra goodies I held my own with Stock 2001 Cobra's.
Quarter Mile it migiht be close because of the things you mentioned but on the highway no contest. The new supercharged Cobra's are very fast, I think they would get me pretty good. : ) Soon as I go I'll post some times, etc.
I'd expect that with the equal-lenght halfshafts. Also the four-link front end design helps a bunch.
Highway comparison isn't an accurate measure of performance. 0-60, Quater and lap times on the same track under the same conditions are the only way to know objectively. As you said. It would be close. But "smoke"? I don't think so.
To each their own but trying to make a FWD car perform well from a driving dynamics standpoint will always be attempting to make a silk purse from a sow's ear IMO. All I'll ask is if FWD is not a hinderance why don't you see race car designers opt for it over RWD when the rules allow?

I totally agree that RWD and AWD is better in the performance department. I'm not that crazy, but plenty of Quattro owners know what a FWD can do to them in certain situations. My next car will be RWD or AWD for sure., but that's doesn't mean that FWD Audi's suck or that I'm not happy with my car's performance. That's all. : )

And, no, this doesn't apply to FMIC's.
