so if I wanted to buy dad a good all around dremel kit.... which one do I get?

Dremel is a brand name. Get a kit that has an assortment of bits for projects that ...........
you might be using it for. Sears and most major industrial supply houses (McMaster, Graingers, etc.) carry "Dremel", along with other hand held die grinders / rotary deburring tools.
