Slow today. Worst repair mistake you ever did on a vehicle? mine is...
I was changing out a timing chain plastic guard on my pick up. I was doing it the hard way taking as little off as possible. There were 2 screws holding in the old guard. I ripped a t shirt shoved it down near crank gear so I wouldn't drop the bolts down. saved me a few times. Everything went well.
My sister shows up at my house and chews my ear off for 45min about nothing. I go back button everthing up. turn it over. starts to go then stops. i try again and thats when I realized.
i left the shirt in there. yup. valve kissed the piston b/c the shirt wrapped around the crank sprocket and jumped timming. I had to do a basic total rebuild after. valves and pistons were fine though. Still in process.

Did something similar while doing a head gasket on my 83 Jetta. I'm sure you can see where is going
4 rags at the beginning, 3 rags when I was done. Fortunately I discovered the mistake before I turned the key. I ended up pulling the rag out through the spark plug hole in little tiny pieces. Took me half an hour.

several months ago when I was doing my 2nd timing belt install, I neglected to tighten the 4 bolts..

that hold the accessory belts (pictured on the upper right hand corner of the pic above), and didn't understand why my car was making some weird noises. Luckily when i brought it to Quattrohaus for them to diagnose the sound, they somehow figured out that I forgot to tighten this. They saved me from disaster.

.well funny now anyway.
Many, many moons ago I agreed to install an in-car cell phone and hands free kit for my friends boss.
No problem I thought...easy install, cash job.
Yeah right!!
The leather trim panels on the pillars, and the carpeting was glued down to the metal in those cars.
What a nightmare!!!
Oh, and it's Bertone,with an "e" at the end.

Installed camshaft sprocket on my 1.8T wrong way.
On the other side of that sprocket there is also mark. Engine was working like diesel, had to buy new sprocket b/c old one almost chipped tooth (inside), redo TB, everything OK.
