Default coolant leak...

I am on my trip in Montreal. This morning I brought my car to a local dealership for an oil change after break-in and an inspection for the 2 days track in Tremblant Jockey hooked me up with. That inspection revealed a coolant leak on the alternator. There is a red crusty stuff on the alternator casing. It has to be replaced. they located one in Toronto that should arrive in Montreal by the end of the week. Replacement is scheduled on next Monday. It is a 8 - 9 hrs job. They have to remove the whole front of the car. I'll try to take some pics when the job is goin on, if they let me.
About oil change I post a new thread above.

Default umm, that's not fun.

The coolant pump is connected to the block by the PTO, in the lower, left portion of the motor, if looking from the rear. (That is, the rear of bank 2, or the driver's side bank.)

The PTO drives the a/c, coolant, and power steering pumps. It's a bitch to get in there. We were having a hard time getting to the power steering pump under the car without having to remove too much stuff.

But I imagine the coolant pump has to have the entire front taken off. The alternator sits on the bank 1 side, or the passenger side, right underneath the intake valves.

It's possible that the coolant sprung a leak near the alternator, since the alternator has it's own COOLANT SOURCE! I know, it's amazing, our alternators actually have their own cooling system. It's run off the same pump that cools the engine, but the pipe runs underneath the radiator and feeds the alternator. Very cool stuff.

Shouldn't take him any more than a day I would think. Let's just hope they don't have to remove the axles to get to it. That means alignment, and that's a PITA.

Probably the line that feeds the alternator. Maybe the alternator needs to be replaced?

After the tech it's the alternator itself - bad housing most likely from the factory.

Default The alternator is water cooled? Is this common on Audis?

Never heard of that before.

Default this is a first that I've heard. But it uses the same cooling (and coolant) as the engine...

cooling system. There's a line that feeds the alternator.
