Skipping Gears

Through my perpetual laziness I find my self skipping gears all the time in my S4 when leasurly cruising around tryin to save some gas; most skipped gears are 3rd and 5th. I just go straight from 2nd to 4th then to 6th. Anybody else guilty of shifter laziness?

I tend to only use about 1k rpms for each gear. So much power.

Col, I know you are new to the forum, this has been discussed previously. Nevertheless

Many of us routinely skip gears. The gearing and torque are such that skipping gears is not only possible but sometimes it is just convenient. BTW,it will not hurt the car in any way unless you are lugging the engine.

I either skip or short shift. I can't decide which is more efficient, but I have a theory.

Don't you love theories? That's all I do with the s4...theorize!

Anyway, the theory is this. Efficiency wise, revving 1st to 3k and skipping to 3rd is as fuel efficient as reving 1st and 2nd to 2k and shifting.

So my overall procedure is to either short shift by default to save gas, or if I forget and rev high in first (it's just so damn tempting with all the power we have in the v8 baby), then I just skip to 3rd or even 4th!

My theory is if you want to improve gas mileage, don't rev 1st and 2nd more than needed.

Easy to say. So tough to do! Get into 3rd as early as possible. ( this is NOT the way I usually drive)

I never skip. I enjoy shifting and IMO skipping maximizes your gas mileage only if you drive

conservatively or one dimensionally. This doesn't work for me because from one moment to the next my driving style can change. If I don't skip I still have control over the car's ability to be efficient and I retain that control over a wide array of driving styles. My 2...
