Default MIN oil light at 3063 miles...???

The line was in the middle of the "b" part of the stick...should this be happening?

I bought some Mobil 1 0w-40 and topped it off with 1/2 quart...just got it to the top of the "a" part of the dipstick.

Started her up, light was gone. Comments? TIA...

Default Yes a lot of people have reported this. It's normal for a car to burn oil especially during

the breakin. I had to give a quart or more at 3500, 8300,and 12,500.

Default have you been checking your oil at every other fill up?

If not you should be. There are two min lights, 1 at ~1qt down and one at 2.5-3qts down. 1qt isnt a big deal for this engine. the second one is getting below operating conditions for this engine. Just check it every once in a while and splash it if its a little low.

Default It's normal, BUT (sorry JD)

the definition of normal means the conditon is present at least 50% of the time. Some S4 owners have reported ZERO oil consumption, so what is really normal? Oil consumption can come from ONLY 2 places. Either you are burning it or you are leaking it. If you're not leaking oil(not likely), then you are burning oil through blow by of the piston rings. I would bet that you were very carefull not to rev the engine or acellerate hard during the break in period. (I have yet to see any posts about oil consumption from thosre few owners that broke their engines in in a more agressive manner). My fear is that your problems stems from in adequate piston ring seating. ( I hope that I am wrong, for this is my opinion, but shared by others). I hope your oil consumption problem dissapears. Many have reported oil consumption problems going away with additional mileage. PLEASE!!!, let us not start another break in debate. Just think of where the lost oil is going. Check the link for one of the many theories about break in, THIS IS NOT THE ONLY ONE.

MOTOMAN

Default I think 8300 & 12500 miles are way past breakin. Where do you think the oil is going?

Answer, you are burning it in blow by past the piston rings. Why? Your rings havent seated properly. Only other explanaton is leakage or valve guides. ( I don't even know if this engine has valve guides). BTW many owners report NO oil consumption. Why? Piston rings are adequately seated. I am open for an alternate explanation.

Default Well, I have put over 20,000 miles on my car since October. That's a lot of miles in a very short

period of time. I know that I am burning oil but not sure if it's for the reason you say. I'm also not sure if it has anything to do with breakin behavior. Could be but honestly I have not given it much thought. My car drives great and I have not had one serious service issue to date. So I have to give my car a quart of oil every 5,000-10,000 miles. IMO, not a big deal.

Default I didn't baby it...

I just drove normally, with a few shots into 5-6k during passing and downshifting.

I'm really not concerned, as I get no smell, and the engine has been running better than ever.

I'll just keep a better eye on it.

Default ummm im at 8000 mi with NO oil loss..

Mobil-1 0w40 =) heheh. So maybe it is another issue =) I sorda babied it but followed JD's break in procedure. After 1000mi, I did some timing runs up to 6.5-7k in S mode. Now, it handles fine and I have no fear of going and shifting at 6-7k.

Default Only 2 reasons for oil loss. Leaking it or burning it.

Some oil loss is considered "NORMAL"?
