unsolicited advice: do secure your dog with a strap. And not to the dog collar. A proper harness, one that you could lift them off the ground like a suitcase without hurting them.
It isn't fun having to stop hard then having to modulate the pedal or think about driving around the problem because you can hear the dog in trouble in the back. A panic stop will send a dog thru the front windscreen or worse.

Word of advice about dog.

I have taken my dog for many a ride in my S4. My dog is older and basically sits or sleeps on the front passenger seat.(I know about the front airbag issue). But, my advice is to buy a bath towel to match the interior color. You can then fold it and tuck it into the seams of the seat. There are 2 benefits to this. It protects the seats from dirt, dog hair, and claw scratches. Plus it gives the dog better footing and less likelyhood of him sliding, especially if you have the Nappa leather. I also understand that the Alcantera can be a bitch to clean. I know this post will start a rash of dog pictures, but that's OK!

One nice item on the Avant - there is a built in pet screen you can pull up
on the top of the rear seat that can be used with the rear seats either up or down. When the seats are up it separates the rear end just behind the seats and when the rear seats are down, it goes up right behind the driver's seat.
