Default Anyone here ever look at VWs?

I was at the dealer the other day talking with my salesman and I started looking at the Passat W8 wagon. Now, it is not and S4, I know. But, the car does have 270 hp, 4-motion, leather interior, Bi-Xenons, rain sensing wipers, and all our premium package options standard, plus many more... VW has about the same build quality as Audi and they offer options that we can only dream about right now. Yes, we do have the Recaros!

Now I am not trying to compare Audi to VW but seeing this wagon and my friends new 2004 Touareg with all the above options and more make me wonder why Audi does not offer all this stuff to us!? I just wish that I could get bi-xenons and rain sensing wipers on my S4. I thought that Audi was the higher end line of the VAG group and thus I thought it should have the premium options first!

I just wanted to see what others felt about small things like this.

Default About that W8...

Car and Driver had some fairly negative views on the original W8 passats with auto tranmission. They felt that the transmission was very poorly matched to the torque characteristics of the engine. The result was that it was a heavy and slow car, plus quite expensive. I drove a W8 passat sedan, and I am absolutely in agreement. It felt more sluggish than the V6 sedan.

BUT, I read a recent update of the W8, in which the same C&D editors were given a new manual transmission W8 to test. They felt that it completely changed the character of the car, allowing you to tap into the power that the engine offers. Of course, the stick shift version also came std with all sorts of suspension/wheel upgrades, so that helps too.

Bottom line for me is, I was going to consider a W8 stick-shift wagon when I looked to replace my allroad. But there were none to be found near me (the w8 is scheduled to be discontinued any day now). Happily, my audi dealer found me an S4 avant instead, which is the car I really wanted. But if you need the extra space and can find a stick shift w8 wagon, it's probably a pretty nice car.

Default Re: About that W8...

Thanks for the thoughts. I want the S4, the only reason that I ever looked at the VW was because my friends Touareg was so nice and packed with great options.

I'm going to look around and see if maybe I can find one to test drive. I would not consider buying it without a test drive and a standard.

I just read the C&D article and they didn't like it. I don't think that I could talk myslef into is over the S4. I would REALLY like to have some Bi-xenons however!

Thanks again!

Default yes drove a W8 sport... the interior is VERY cheap and

ugly - no where near on par with the Audi. it had decent power but no where near the S4. we only found one in LA with sport pack and stick....maybe there are more now....and ext looks not as nice as Audi....we considered it but for 42k+ plus for the VeeDUb is too much.
