Default 04' vs. 05' vs M3 vs. C55 ??

Hey guys, looking to get a car in a few months. I tried to buy an S4 when they first came out but wound up getting my wife an E500 instead.

Wondering if there have been any significant changes from 04/05. I still like the M3 and haven't checked out the C55 but both of those cars are 6-8K more. I know the C55 is hot but resale on AMG product is pretty weak, the M3 would still fit my needs and holds its value but a little long in the tooth.

Couple things I think about, S4 is not as tossable as the M3 and I'd like to consider the tip but heard its substantially slower than the manual. Also what kind of mileage are you guys getting. TIA for any help.

Default my opinion...

the Tip is not "substantially" slower than the 6MT, i'd say more "marginally"...

i've been seeing on average about 17-18mpg, but i'm still in the break in, drive it like an old fart mode...

changes for 05 are, option of CF trim, instead of the wood, different headlamp lenses... some are calling them Xenon+ but who knows for sure, other than that they are pretty much the same car...

tip is def slower m3 c55 you won't be able to keep up. You will in 60-100 range though I just did with m3 on my way up from florida. Pretty much neck and neck sometimes he pulled sometimes I did. he was def a better driver than me. Cool guy.

Gas on highway up was 23-24 I usually filled up at 280-300 miles and still had 1-2 gallons left pre reserve.

Also, for me the 04 was by far cheaper than others

c55 61k
m3 59 (w/smg etc)
s4 46.5k

Others just not worth the 13+ Also I like how solid the car feels, awd up north, and the torque from the v8 is just sick (I'm sure the c55 is awesome as well)

05 I think also has smaller sat antenna and carbon fiber looks great IMO.

Good luck

Default Realistically, if you get better than 15mpg in town you will be lucky!

You will be unable to resist the urge to put the pedal to the metal. This car is VERY thisty unless you REALLY drive it ULTRA conservatively . 20 mph highway is obtainable.

Good in-town MPG requires extreme restraint (uncommon on this forum). Highway: Different story.

Default 04' vs. M3. even though our S4 Avant is not even broken it yet....

it is at least as fun if not more fun that our M3 - but the jury is still out (till its broken in). I'd go for the stick unless you drive a lot in traffic....and there is just something satisfying about passing others on the on ramps or at green lights ....in a "wagon". bottom line - S4 for daily driver or if you need 4 doors/wagon/AWD - M3 if you plan to be on the track a lot and want every last second to count.

Go with manual - the gearbox is fantastic and it feels way faster than the TIP which I drove once. I got Dolphin Gray Avant with carbon -- it looks stunning. Gas consumption sucks huge, which I don't care about except that the car has a small tank for an engine that drinks that much, and you can literally watch the gas gauge drop (I'm exaggerating but I think you'll need to do a lot of fill ups). I haven't driven either the M3 or the benz.

Depending on how bad the weather can get where you live, should go with an S4. I went to the NY auto show and fell in love with the C55 they had there but I drive a Z06 vette and remembered with rwd when it snows up here it really really sucks. I have fallen in love with the Audi it is much fun to drive and much more practical at least in snowy climates (gas mileage not included)
