Default Need the Board's opinion

My local Audi dealer has an '04 S4 with 7K miles on the odometer for $48K. They call it a demo. One of the Manager's used it as his personal transportation for a few months. The car has never been tittled, so it's being sold as a new car with an extended warranty. I like the car but the $48K price seems high to me. Audi '05s are out already, so if I buy the car I essentially am buying a year old car with 7K miles. If I sold it back to the same dealer a month later they would probably give me $38K for the car.

What do you think is a fair price for the car? Also, does anyone know how many miles a dealer can put on a new car and still sell it as a "new car"?

Too high. I paid less than that for a brand new car.

Default Audi Dealers are slimy...

They want your desire for the car to overwhelm your rational thinking. They will tell you: "This 04 car wont be here long", "You're getting a deal on a car that is nearly identical to a 05", "This car has been properly broken in", "This car is worth nearly sticker price", etc. etc.

You have to be rationale: this is a bad deal for these reasons:

Price: If you leased a new car for 1 year, your residual will make the car lose a huge amount, probably 15-20%. With the 05s pumping out, you're on the cusp of the curve, and will lose value in the next few months. I guarantee there will be people trading in their 04 S4s over the next 6 months, either mid lease or early in their purchase, to buy bigger cars or newer cars. They'll have 10k-20k miles. Be patient and buy one of those.

Breakin: I was a saleperson in a car dealership. We never, ever, ever broke in the cars. We nailed the acceleration at every opportunity.

Demo: Demo is 1000 miles, maybe 3000 miles. Not seven thousand...this turd will sit on the lot for a while. Remember the primary buyer of this car can afford full sticker and wants a new car, not a used car. Tell them that and then tell them you'll pay $44k and take it right now. If they dont do it, walk off and keep your car for another few months while you're looking for demos and other low mileage cars turn up...

Leftistelf: I agree with you 100%. I had to laugh when you suggested the $44K price because it was only one thousand more than what I thought was a good offer: $43K. By the way as a former salesperson, do you know if there is a limit as to how many miles you can put on a new car and still sell it as a new car? To my way of thinking there's no way that a dealer should be able to put 7K miles on a car and still sell it as new. I know there are damage limits. I bought a '93 Infiniti J 30 that suffered hail damage, and although the car only had 35 miles on the odometer, they had to sell it as a used car. They knocked $5k off the sticker and there were no delivery charges.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay?

Default It depends on the options. If its completely loaded, I'd start negotiations at $42K and maybe go up

to $45k. You should be able to get into a new one for their "asking" price.

agreed; my guess is you can negotiate @ least 5-7K off that price, then it would be a good deal

Default Price Seems a little high, but the milage fits in...

The dealership that I go to just went through a management change. Therefore all the previous people with demos had to turn them back in. The milage ranged from 3k-14k, all "punched" as demos. Ask for betweek 43-44k.. BTW what dealer are you talking about?
