5k service and dealer explanation of startup noise(long)
Today I dropped the car off for the 5k freebie plus the manifold bolts and startup noise remedy.
My dealer provided a free synthetic oil change(Castrol Syntec) as I didn't have time to pickup Mobil 1 on my way there.
While my VIN # fell into the needs fixing range, it also had the yellow OK dot and the bolts were at the proper torque.
Dealer claimed the startup noise is "normal" and is caused by the timing chain adjusting. However, this happens only on the S4 and not on other 4.2's as the S4 has the timing chain ,etc in the rear of the engine?? Am I getting snowed with this explanation?

Mine is a smidge noisy at cold fire up(2001 s4 auto). It's definitely NOT bottom end, more likely timing chain or valvetrain.
I'm debating about switching to synthetic. I think regular oil is in there now. I deliver parts for a living, and a lot of shops say yes to synth, some say keep it clean and run reg. I'll decide before it goes in for the 50,000 service.
You're not alone on the cold start noise though.
