Some answers/clarifications regarding DBW:
First, understand that our car has two basic throttle programs. Program (b) is active when the car is stopped or when the clutch pedal is depressed. This is a mostly unfiltered, linear program. As soon as the car starts rolling AND the clutch pedal is released, the car switches to program (a). This program is smoothed, filtered, delayed, and generally undesirable.
My relay replaces the sensor that tells the car the clutch pedal is "home" (not depressed). This relay is a simple on/off switch that automatically turns it self off and on indefinitely. I have it set up so that the car thinks the clutch pedal is depressed all of the time, thus giving me the much more desirable map (b) all of the time. The only downside is that you cannot use cruise control while the relay is active.
I have left the aforementioned clutch "home" sensor in its place; it's just not plugged any more. This is a very non-invasive mod, and when I'm done I will have a simple toggle switch that activates my "sport" mode.
I will post some pics/do a more complete write-up by the end of the day (hopefully). I just wanted you all to know that this really does work, and a little about how it works in the meantime!
I wonder what other things I might notice related to clutch programming with the sensor tripped, i.e. car thinks the clutch is in. Probably nothing, but when you have a relay mod write up, I might try it out.
