Default More DBW "insight"...

I plugged in my clutch sensor this morning before I went to work, just to see what the stock configuration felt like again. Also, I got tired of seeing a bunch of wires sitting next to my shifter every time I got into my car. This weekend I will wire up a proper switch.

Anyway, impressions: of course the delay came back (when transitioning from off-throttle to on-throttle), but I noticed something else about the stock configuration (to those of you whom have read AvramD's reports, this may be old news). When I re-apply the throttle (to maybe 20% travel) after decelerating, the car has the obligatory 0.4-second delay, which I've come to know and love, but now I've noticed that thereafter it seems to over-compensate by delivering what feels like full power--all while my foot is still at 20%. I didn't really notice this before, but now that I've spent a few days with a throttle that performs what I ask it to *every single time*, this issue is more apparent.

Along those same lines, I will note that my "modded" throttle that I've been using the last few days is still not really linear--I still get 99% of the engine's available torque in the first 25% of pedal travel (maybe a little exaggeration there, but you get my point). In other words, my mod DOES make it feel like a predictable cable-operated throttle; just with an aggressive cam on the butterfly's axis. So maybe this "throttle doubling" I feel now with the stock setup is just the fact that I am getting 99% power at 25% throttle pedal as always, but the delay with which it is delivered is throwing me for a loop.

I also may have discovered another reason Audi (or Bosch) programmed the throttle the way they did: fuel mileage. I have not racked up enough miles to prove any of this, but I got about 2mpg better on my way to work this morning with the stock setup than I did the last two days on the "modded" setup. This is all according to my trip computer, by the way. I can explain/rationalize this result in a lot of different ways, but I can't be sure it wasn't the combination of stoplights I hit this morning, so I'll hold off.

That's it for now...and remember that I've not reprogrammed anything, it's still a DBW, and I still don't know exactly what I'm doing!

Default I think I'm the minority here (no kidding)

I (like all of you) have sat here, read post after post after post bout this DBW and delays and stuff.

I guess I'm just not bothered by it, I've adapted and moved on, it's the car, it sure as hell ain't that bad and by no means is it a dealbreaker for me. Feels weird I just see so much "DOOD THIS SUCKS!" on the dbw, but honestly, I just don't get it. who knows, maybe I'm missing the boat here, but I'm nothing short of facinated by the amount of "interest" and heresay and pilot testing that has gone into this subject. I mean hell, AvaramD after ALL that he's gone through gets the A4 and in his very FIRST post, says, yep, it's still here. HELLO! duh! so I know I'm gonna **** someone off on this but call it what you will (I'm in an argumentative mood today), why not just let it be? The car was R&D'd and programmed as such, adapt and make do, it's awesome and I know someone somewhere will ALWAYS have something to say bout how "it" could be improved as such, but from Day to day, I just don't see how something so subtle could cause such a Ruckus!

but now I guess it's time to sit back, and watch the posts fly as to how come I "don't get it!"

fire away....

flame suit on...

btw, to each his / her own. that's why we have opinions.... this is simply mine.

Default After I had the manifold TSB done and throttle adapt reset,

my car is fine. My major b*tch about the car before was how difficult (ie, nearly impossible) it was to get a smooth shift. But that problem has completely dissapeared and it's been 2500 miles since the throttle adapt/TSB.

OTOH, if these guys who are still deeply bothered by the DBW want to tell us about their experimental changes, I'm all ears.

Default Hey man, that's okay!

Feel free to voice your opinion--it's great that you are 100% satisfied. This DBW is not a deal-breaker for me either; I would not trade this car for anything (I mean how many other 340hp wagons are there out there...besides the massive, automatic-only Dodge?). The only reasons I'm messing with the thing are that it turned out to be really easy to do and that it bothered me when my requests for throttle were ignored. And the only reason I've posted about it is because I've read others' complaints about the same.

But Dojo, I think even you would be convinced if you drove my car--you don't know what you're missing ;-)

Default I agree with you to a large extent... although I applaud the initiative and research...

When you look at this car, overall, it is simply INCREDIBLE. Like EsFourMe said, I wouldn't trade it for anything. True, the car ain't perfect. But PLEASE tell me what car is without foibles. I didn't understand AvramD's being upset to THAT extent. To let something as subtle as this, something that effects your driving about 1% of the time you're in the car, bother you sooooo much that it urks you to the point of getting rid of it, thus missing the fantastic THRILL that it is to drive this car 99% of the time.... I don't get it. True, that annoyance, the DBW, and it's efforts to interfere with my right foot commands should not be there. It's just not right. But look at the big picture. The car is INCREDIBLE! It's not that bad! I get full throttle when I want it. Have I had to adapt a little? I don't know. If I did it's not discernable, but I know that when I want to go I mash the throttle and this thing takes off! Every once in a while DBW shows it's head. Not enough for me to get upset about.

But again, I'm all for learning, which is why I like EsFourMe's efforts. This car, largely, is a mystery. So, so much we don't know. I'm not brave enough to crack it open to see what's inside so I like it when someone else is. Keep it up and keep us informed.
