Default Shifter

On the manuel trans does the shifter ****/ sheath actually just press fit on the shaft? I did a speed shift last night and pull 2nd gear hard and I popped it off. It snaps right back in place but it seems very odd to me. I hate to have to go take it to the dealer to check this out and I know you guys know all the answers so post away.

Thanks

It just slides on and has a little band clamp to hold it in place

Default Yea, even if the clamp is on there, there's a chance it will come off.

Learn to shift smoothly and you'll be fine. ;-)

Quick!! But smoothly... ;-)

Go buy a new clamp or tie and you can do it yourself.

How do you get under the leather boot?

Default The chrome trim around the base of the boot is flexible plastic. Just...

GENTLY push it inwards (toward the shifter) and the two tabs should pop free, allowing you to pull the boot up over the ****. This will reveal the base of the **** which you will see, aligns with a groove in the shaft to keep it in place. Just put a new clamp of plastic tie around the base and tighten. Good as new!

Default If you take a look at the Stratmosphere short shifter instructions, figure 2 shows the band clamp

It will probably be tough to tell if yours is messed up (fubared) without lifting up the shift boot and checking it out.

If it is messed up, you can replace the band clamp with a new one or a zip tie.<ul><li><a href="http://www.stratmosphere.com/audi%20short%20shift%20kit%20S4%202004%20V8.pdf">S trat short shifter installation</a></li></ul>

Exactly. Jamming the shifter into gears doesn't make you faster!
