Default XM question?

I have and love my XM. I know it's Marketed as a U.S. only system, but how well will it work in Canada? I may drive up North in the late spring and wondered how far North of the border I can go and still have XM reception?

Default My understanding...

is that it will work fine in the lower latitudes but quality will decrease the further north you go. Also, there are no repeaters in Canada so downtown areas will have poor reception because buidlings will block the line of site to the sats. Also, go behind a hill or mountain and reception will be lost.

Default That is correct, since XM sat is in orbit over the equator

The high north you the lower on the horizon the line of sight to the sat you are. I don't know how far north XM people have gone. I don't want to turn this into a Sirius vs. XM thread, but the Sirius birds are in a orbit where they are in motion over over South America and North America. There are always two birds over North America at any one time and they travel very far north. I know from the Sirius forums that people in Alaska and very far northern Canada use Sirius without any problems. Their obital posistions may enable them to serve Canada better than XM.

Please don't consider this a knock against XM, I don't want to start a war. Just trying to explain how the birds are in orbit.

This is how the Sats look in Orbit. Shows the 2 XM birds and the Sirius birds

Default That's pretty cool. Seems like Sirius has better coverage? I see two staionary satellites for ...

XM and one rotating on the equator. Looks like Sirius has 3 satellites with at least two of them giving coverage?

Default I don't know about that. XM had to deploy more repeaters to compensate (which is not a bad thing)

But back to the original question. You would think Sirius would be in a better position to rollout service to Canada.
