Default Former B5 S4 to M3 considering B6 S4 (long)

A little history...I had a chipped B5 which I loved, blew the turbos, bought an M3. I also love the M3, but it is an '02 and the warranty will expire in 100 miles with two expensive services (brakes and Inspection II) upcoming. I could purchase an extended servicing plan from the dealer for $695 (4 yr/50k mi.) or $1700 (6 yr/100k mi). I am about 3k upside down on the car, which is around the cost of the future services, so it would seem to be a wash. I've been looking and B6's can be had with less than 15k miles in the low 40's. Seems to be a good deal, my payment would stay in the same ball park and I'd have an '04 instead of '02. Also, my commute has changed and traffic in the Northern suburbs of Atlanta is a bit#h. I'm also 30 now and the racecar character of the M3, while certainly fun, has gotten a little tiresome. You have to work so hard to get the car to go fast that I hardly ever do it anymore. I miss the torque of my old S4 and the revered Audi interior. I know that the M3 and S4 are completely different beasts, and I think that I am ready to make the switch back to Audi. So, now the question... How is the Tip in the B6? I know that there will be some performance drop off, but how much? If you have a tip, do you regret it?

Default Well, you should test drive one

And you likely can find a new S4 for the low to mid 40's.

Default Yeah, I've driven the manual and (m)

liked the engine and power delivery. Just wanted a quick comparo between it and the tip.

Default S4 6MT is very easy to drive in traffic

I commute to Boston on the dreaded Rt. 3 from the South Shore. 6MT has been very manageable.

Default There is a performance drop between the tip and manual...

As a former B5 S4 owner (6MT) I have regrets with my current B6S4 tip. The tip is great if you spend a lot of time in traffic, but it has lower shift points (6,300 to 6,800 rpm's) and will be slower off the line. That 2% of my wheel time when I'm at the track or in the canyons is pretty much the only time I feel at a disadvantage.

You will enjoy either and the tip has a lot of flexibility, but go into this with a test drive and open eyes.

Default Note: gas consumption at idle:

I commute in Atlanta. You probably know the only downside is fuel consumption. On the highway i can deal with it. But in Atlanta traffic, my trip home is an hour and a half of stop and go 10 feet! I am consuming almost half a tank a day!
I will probably buy another commuting car, and use the s4 on weekends.

Agree, so much torque that you often times don't need to downshift.

3rd...and when you DO have to shift, the clutch is extremely "light" (easy to depress)

Default Yep. That's what I did. I go about 300 miles to the tank in my focus and it only costs me $19 to

fill up! Gotta love that
