I didn't, but several others reported similar experiences. It doesn't appear to be cause for alarm.

Default Yes! and NO!

Many owners,(not me) have reported oil consumption issues during the first 5K miles. For some, the problem went away after 5K for others the oil consumption remains. First of all, OIL IS CHEAP! But you ARE burning oil! Why? Because your breakin proceedure has not allowed the piston rings to seat properly. Is it too later to get the ring to seat? Maybe, maybe not. Audi's recommended break in proceedure does not allow the piston rings to seat quickly. This is what you NOW need to do. DO some frequent WIDE OPEN THROTTLE runs(Not necessarily from a dead stop) to the redline. At redline let the engine decellerate on its own(engine braking). Drive the car hard but don't beat it. If you are lucky, the rings may still have time to seat completely. BTW Audi says oil consumption is normal. To date, I have over 10K miles and have yet to use a drop of oil. ( I guess that is abnormal). ABOVE ALL, do not put synthetic oil in your car if you are experiencing oil consumption in the first 5K. You need more engine wear, not less!

Motomans, break in theory.

agree -- but he is likely too late to seat the rings properly

Default I know, but was trying to put a positive spin on my response!

Some members who had experienced oil consumption in the first 5K have reported that it diminished significantly after 5K.

Default I am surprised ..

I have driven this car like I have stole it from day one. I have a Z06 which I did the exact same thing with and that thing burns next to no oil at all. Even now with the supercharger under boost the rings hold tight. People baby their vehicles to the point of not enjoying it or are scared to ruin it. I have always felt that it is a consumable commodity. I am just surprised to be down this much oil this quickly, but I am not the least bit upset as the car runs flawlessly.

Thanks

Default IMHO that's why you are burning oil...

I differ from Dr GP and feel Audi wouldn't but break-in recommendations in the owners manual to waste paper and ink, but that's just me.

I've always broken in engines according to the manual, and have never had a problem with my rings not seating. Must just be me.
