For the "pros" of you who go to the track, what should I be looking for when buying a helmet?

Default you should find a local place and try them on. Very important since different brands fit differently

I have a Bell M3 and I'm really happy with it.

Default Rule #1 - make sure it fits.

It needs to be snug enough to be useful when it counts, but comfortable enough so you can stand wearing it for extended periods of time.

I spend one day last weekend where there were 3 20 minute run sessions during the day when I wasn't in someone's car or my own. That's a lot of hours worth of wearing a helmet. Thankfully mine fits.....

Default I'm no pro, but I like my Arai GP Jet helmet alot. It's very light.

I might replace it when the SA05 cert helmets are released. The replacement helmet would be a full-face type with a large eye port.

Default Arai, helmets come in a bunch of different head shapes

Which is good because a helmet that fits is very important.

Default A few suggestions

Arai are very good helmets, but for a beginner they are overkill and expensive. My advice:
1. Get a SA2000 Snell rated helmet (most race shops sell the SA (Special Application) designation as opposed to motorcycle helmets.
2. Spend $200 - $300 on a closed-face helmet. that will buy you a good helmet
3. Visit OG Racing, Safe Racer, Helmet City or an on-line seller. Most offer charts to help you measure your head for the right helmet.
4. Buy a protective case/bag. If the helmet is dropped, it's considered ruined so take good care of it.

The new Snell designations for the 2005 helmets come out later this year. Buy inexpensive now, see how you like it, then when the new helmets come out, you can think about upgrading.

Default Get the best you can afford. You only have 1 brain. (Well, most...) ;-)

I went with a Bell Mag 4. I can't stand the closed-face kind. So I went with speed racer.

I can get you in touch with somebody that can get you a deal on the helmet. Let me know.

Default ...what they said. don't try to mail order, you need to check for good and comfortable fit.

Online you can get a sense of selection and cost, but ALWAYS try on.

Love my Bell M2...no too pricy, great fit (for me) and eyeport.

Default If you're near northern NJ, go to OMP's warehouse (Danville?).

I can't stress it enough...try the helmet, and ask the person in the store to help you determine if the fit is right. It needs to be snug, but not uncomfortable. I tried 5-6 difference helmets from 3-4 different brands before I settled on one that fit properly. Based on this, I wouldn't recommend buying based on a sizing chart...you really need to put it on your head to see if it's comfortable or not.

Default SNELL 2000 rating, esp. "SA" rating

If you can wait till next year, the SNELL 2005 rating helmets will be out.
