Default Some info from Audi on timing 'belt' replacement at 75,000 miles

I've spoken to 2 people I know that work for Audi in my region, and they've both spoken with the product manager for our engine. That person says the manual is wrong, and that the timing chain is expected to be a lifetime part.

As you can imagine, one of the people cautioned (knowing that I track the car) that I should be changing the oil more often than the suggested interval and be running synthetic oil (good advice all around....).

Does anyone know if the 2005 S4 manual has the same 'typo' in it? Are the B7 S4s out yet?

Default I'd imagine they expect it to be lifetime

but then again, if it breaks at 100k, audi won't be paying for new heads...

A note of interest. All VR6 motors have timing chains. VW recommends that they be replaced at 100k (i think that is what it said), but no one ever does. I've never heard of one breaking, ever. They do have the tensioners start making noise, but that is it.

Default I heard the same thing. My techs say it's supposed to be a lifetime component as well.

They said the guides might need to be replaced, but that's the only thing they can see needing any attention, and they aren't sure that needs to be replaced either.

But I'm definitely in agreement with the oil change frequency. I average an oil change every 3-5k, depending on my track schedule.

Yeah...belts wear out...chains should last the life of the engine.

Default Well, AoA says the tip tranny fluid is lifetime also, but ZF (tranny manf.) says change it at least

every 60k miles. I would imagine that a timing chain may stretch ever so slightly, but should never require normal replacement unless you were doing an engine overhaul. If you never change your tip tranny fluid, it really is a lifetime fluid - when fluid dies, so does the tranny and then you need new tranny and new fluid...just like the lifetime coolant - what is the def. of "lifetime"? Some say 100k miles, some say longer. Crapshoot in some cases. Fluids definitely need more frequent attention than timing CHAINS! Never changed a Detroit engine timing chain unless the engine was being rebuilt or upgraded.

Default LOL, I'm sure AOA and ZF disagree on maintenance. ;-)

AoA doesn't want to have to pay for service it "deems" is not necessary! Who...Audi??? ;-)

Does seem very interesting. I agree with you and don't think the chain needs tightening, but it's not against Audi to say that you may "require" service past the warranty/Advantage period. LOL.
