Default new to Audi.. want information on A4 Turbo Quattro

Hi,

I'm curious about the Audi A4 Turbo Quattro.
I'm looking at buying one of these and setting it up as a daily driver and occasional motorsport (motorkhana, drags, track days) car. But nothing too extreme..

How much power can the standard turbo put out. What parts do you supply to get it to this level?
Are there any easy bolt on turbo upgrades?

How strong is the standard gearbox and clutch? What about diffs?

I would also be setting up the suspension, which is the best, preferably adjustable for rebound.. camber, etc..

Also brakes.. do DBA or similar have upgrade calipers and discs?

I'd like a 1/4 mile time of around 13.5-14.0 and handling similar to my Lancer GSR (koni suspension and full whiteline catalogue)

Thanks for any answers or links to information in advance

jim,
perth, western australia

Wow - thats a lot of questions - many of which require very in depth answers - here is some info to get you started though.

"How much power can the standard turbo put out. What parts do you supply to get it to this level?
Are there any easy bolt on turbo upgrades? "

The standard KO3 turbo is good for not much more than 200/210 horse power - it just cant flow enough air for more power. All you need to get to this level is a chip. (Budget around $1500). Adding an exhaust and FMIC will also help - but not much - they are both just good for long term turbo life and cooler intake charges for longer term power. The stock intercooler isnt much chop after you hammer it for a bit.

You can bolt on a KO4 turbo for around 250/260 horses - budget $2500 for turbo and another $500 for misc. stuff - plus you will need a exhaust, and clutch at a minimum and i would reccomend a FMIC as well.

"How strong is the standard gearbox and clutch? What about diffs? "

There are quite a few people putting out in excess of 400 horse power at the wheels on the standard gearbox - its very strong. But if you do something stupid like boost loading and dropping the clutch (assuming you have a decent aftermarket clutch) - chances are you will break something if you are making big power.

Stock clutch is CRAP - Period. Its one of the first things you change after a chip.

You WONT break diffs - I am not aware of anyone breaking one - and there are quite a lot of people making 400+HP across the world in these cars on stock diffs.

"I would also be setting up the suspension, which is the best, preferably adjustable for rebound.. camber, etc.. "

How much you want to spend? I am about to spend nearly 5 grand on Stasis Engineering Track Sport suspension for my Audi - one of the other guys in Melbourne just spent 8 grand for a full motorsport kit - all depends what you want and how deep your wallet is.

"Also brakes.. do DBA or similar have upgrade calipers and discs? "

Yes they do - but consider what goal you are trying to acheive and again how deep your pocket is. I run full Stoptech 333 X 33mm 4 piston brakes up front - around $4K to do the fronts. Some of the other guys run porsche or AP kits - around the same price. Stock brakes are ok - but if u want to do any serious track work - u will want and need bigger.

"I'd like a 1/4 mile time of around 13.5-14.0 and handling similar to my Lancer GSR (koni suspension and full whiteline catalogue)"

You will need to spend some pretty big $ to acheive that - you will need pretty much the same set up I have. KO4 turbo, FMIC, Clutch, Exhaust, Extreme Chip, and various other bits n' pieces.

Handling wise - ive never drive a lancer - but would put odds on a Quattro Audi would eat it. White line stuff is not up to scratch for an Audi - look to other higher quality products.

Hope all this helps!

Default Lots of good questions.

Probably best buying another car if you are after performance as most powerups need to be imported and hence cost a tad more.

There are far more sportier cars out there for the money and even though i plan to do the same motorsport events as you it will take large amounts of cash to get the car ready to do what you have in mind.

Quick answers -

Turbo is preety much at its limit now. You sound like you need a t-28 kit at a cost of 8K landed from US of A for the amount of power you want.

Greaddy make a cool front mount so for the power you want you will need one.

Don't push gear box or diffs to hard euro spares are expensive, That said you could change the gearbox for the 3.0 Quattro and grap some more top end speed due to the different ratios.

Suspension is limited to your wallet - neuspeed have some great bits also from USA. Be cafefull of swaybar choices as a psn with a lilltek sway bar cracked the rear sub frame of the Audi as the brakes placed too much strain on the suspension components.

Brakes - Porsche calipers on floating rotors or a Brembo upgrade. QSZ in Melbourne can help with those.

When you way up the cost you could by an EVO VIII and race stright out of the box.

Your car is your choice - but you will need much money for little performance gain.

Its your choice, i choose the Audi, your choice is your own.

http://www.awe-tuning.com/pages/audi/index.cfm</a

16.1 from the factory.

Flat 14 is not THAT hard - but requires a good driver as much as the right modifications.
