How obsessive are you when turning in your lease?
I'm picking up new avant tomorrow and turning in my '03 B6 avant. I was brought up to return things better than I found them, so I gave her a good OCD detailing today.
But, I'm curious how much it really matters as long as the car comes in clean. They're going to do whatever they do to recondition it to turn it around I suppose. I do think that it's a sign of how well the car was cared for, so I think it's important but was just curious about others' philosophies on this.

Question should be how obsessive is the dealer/broker.
Sounds like you take good care of your vehicle. If your car is in better condition than average, the dealer would likely be pleased to receive it back as-is. My guess is they would assess every car they receive back off lease for detailing and maybe have yours done as policy (even though it would be an easier detail if it is already relatively clean).
The other bonus of turning in a clean car is that the dealer is not likely to look too hard for anything that they think they can charge for above excess wear and tear.
But I would always turn it in clean - as I keep my car anyway.

If you leased through AFS, SGS is going to inspect your vehicle.
They aren't going to care how clean your car is, inside or out. Infact, you're better off keeping it as dirty as posible on the outside to hide any door dings etc. Lastly, if you car is in bad shape then dont let them perform a pre-term inspection. If they try to charge you for something tell them it didn't exist and that the dealer must have done it (took out floor mats, swapped you new tires for baldones, etc). This is of course highly unethical but i can assure you AFS will let it go.

I always detail my car anytime I take it to the dealership. Whether it be for service or to turn in... I have come to notice you are taken a bit more seriously when it shows you care for your Audi. In the end, I think a dealer will likely believe in the back of his mind your car may have been better taken care of than the average, therefor giving you the benefit of the doubt on any wear issues that may come up. Plus it's cool to be proud of something you have owned since 2003. Good decision.
