Default ordering new avant: headlight question

Hi there, I'm looking to replace my 03 1.8t avant with a 07 s-line. The one thing that bums me out though is the way audi has packaged xenon headlights in a $2k package of features I don't really need. I have xenons on my current car but am considering forgoing them in my new order to save some cash. Can anyone tell me how the stock headlights are compared to the xenons? Obviously the xenons are better but are the stock ones acceptable? Anything that can be done aftermarket to the stock ones (and yup, I did search the forums but didn't find a definitive answer)?

thanks,
h.

I had a 2.0T, Sline, Convienence and Navigation.
I needed the navigation, so I must get the convienence package. So far, I am loving the convienence package, the xenon is so bright. And I have garage and a gate at home, the homelink remote works perfectly w/ them. Power passenger is a luxury addition to your car. It's really up to you to get it or not. Do you need the options?

Default Agreed. I like a-la-carte better, but I know packages save them money.

Although for the $2100 you do get the nearly $1000 xenons. Probably $1000 worth of auto dimming mirrors (they are expensive), a trip computer that some have complained about if they don't get it, and power passenger's seat. (Which while it may not be desirable is quite expensive.)

And then you tack on Homelink and the rain/light sensing. It all adds up and the package is definitely beneficial to anyone who desires all of those options.

Personally the xenons, auto dimming mirrors, and Homelink are worth the package price to me. Everything else is just gravy.

Default Unlike on the B6, the Halogens on the B7 are not projector type so retrofitting Xenon onto them...

would not work (or atleast effectively)...

You may already know this but the Xenon Package is more than just Xenon bulbs, it's also adaptive, autoleveling & far superior beam pattern. IMO, the Xenon Package alone is worth the $2k.
Like gk1 said, everything else is gravy.

Default I hadn't been planning on the convenience package...

but since I had but 1 choice of avant 2.0TQM to choose from, I had to take it. Having never had xenons I'm amazed at the improvement with them. I especially like the way they turn to track with tyour turns.

Default I had the xenons on my '02 but passed on them for the '07...

...strictly due to cost. I checked my '02 invoice and the xenons were a $500 stand alone option. I didn't want or need any of the other convenience options on the '07 and felt that the extra $2100 really impacted the value equation.

Having said all of that, the halogens are ok as far as illuminating the road in front of me, but would I prefer the xenons? Absolutely, just not wrapped in a package for $2100.

Do keep in mind that the xenons are more expensive
to fix if they break. I believe they are ~1000 USD per side. The first week that I got my 2007 I let
a friend of mine drive the new sled. She bottomed it out in a dip. Result was a out spec xenon which
required replacing the whole unit and a crack in
the oil pan. The B7 w sport suspension is apparently quite low.

I only got the convenience package because I got a
break on the car. Also you need the Convenience package to get bluetooth. And if you do not have convenience package the dash display is crippled.

I don't really like the packages this year.
I would have preferred a 3 spoke wheel, but
that was not enough for me to spend 3k on the
appearance package. nee S-Line.

And the xenons do rock, but they are an added
piece of expensive fragility.

bests

I have 2007 A4 2.0t quattro sedan with xenon. I like the low beam. Hate the high beam. My 2001 had xenon low beam with halogen high beam. Much much better arrangement for how to do the the high beam, than the new version.

Be sure you drive one with the lights you are ordering and check whether you like the high beam, before you order.

I recommend that you do some testing to make up your own mind.

BTW, in 6 years my 2001 xenon low beams dimmed a lot. That made the 2007 xenon seem very bright in comparison. Didn't find out what it would have cost to fix those dimmed xenons in my 2001. Of course, with the sharp cut off the 2007 low beam (while bright in close to the car) still doesn't go very far down the road.
