At least Europeans will enjoy the faster, more modern, better handling and more fuel efficient version of the S5 a year early. That's the advantage of not having as strong a muscle car obsession I suppose.
Best to only include a highly-tuned version of the V8 for the RS5. And I believe that's the new plan for the foreseeable future.
Don't get me wrong, I did like it. Very muscular with great sound. Most impressive feature was its linear delivery which kept pulling strongly even at highway speeds. But it was also this linear delivery which made the ride a bit boring.
I drove a 335i soon after and the BMW clearly had the performance edge with its more peppy turbo 6 and sport diff. It also felt faster. An S5 (which is the 335's closest competitor) would fair better with the wider power band, slight weight reduction, better fuel economy and more immediate (i.e fun) delivery of a super 6. I'll gladly sacrifice the 'V8 burble' in exchange for all of the above.
To me the smoother V8 is better suited for a large cruiser like the A8 or be tuned to the extreme for the R8.
And again that's what Audi is set to do. Give the S5 a supercharged V6 and the RS5 an insanely overturned V8. Makes more sense to me.
For instance the current 335 is on par, if not better than the previous generation M3. More power, same suspension, etc.
Audi has had very different strategy. The A and S variants have always been tuned towards street comfort and wider appeal.
For instance the current top end A4 doesn't come close to the performance of the last generation S4.
The RS cars, equivalent to the M cars, have always been a revolution above their lower end mates.
The 100lbs you might save by putting the SC V6 into a S5 is not going to give you a better S5 on weight alone. I've even read that the SC V6 has a peak'ier characteristic, similar to the tt I6 in the 335, and yet is slower than the V8. Turn-in performance will improve, but only slightly, and most likely only noticeable on the track. Certainly not enough to make up for the loss of that butter smooth gurgle and power-in-any-gear feeling the current 4.2l V8 delivers.
I've had 5 years of S tuned V8 experience.
And this is just my opinion.

I have to say that I am excited to see what the after market and Quattro GmbH dream up for performance tuning on this new SC v6.
"But Audi will drop the V-8 from the S5 coupe at the end of the 2010 model year. Replacing it will be the same 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 that comes standard in the new S5 Cabriolet."
