Default Cutting and programming a new key from Ebay

My coupe I just bought came with one key and I am thinking about purchasing this key off ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2002-...1%7C240%3A1318

My question is what steps next? Do I take it to a dealer? Can I do it myself easily? How do I cut the key part? and program the remote part?

Pretty much should I get the key and is that the most economical way to do it by purchasing my own key and then taking it somewhere or getting it all done at one place.

Thanks.

I did the same thing on a Passat that my daughter has. Bought one remote key and one spare key and took all to the VW dealer and had them cut and programmed. Dealer must have ALL the keys in order to reprogram for immobilizer. Unfortunately, as far as I know you do have to go to a dealer for the immobilizer proggramming. Others can cut the key and you can program the remote, but the immobilizer is dealer only.

Crap whats his immobilizer and does that mean if I don't have all the keys my car will get immobilized and stop functioning?

Immobilizer is a form of anti-theft device. Each key contains a chip and the instrument cluster is programmed to recognize each key. Only recognized keys will be allowed to start the car. You'll need to take all yours keys in at one time so dealer can have them all synced to the cluster. Until then, only the key you got with your car will work.

OK I just called Every dealer in town and none of them will cut a key from Ebay. They want $100 to program and $399 for the key. This is ridiculous. Any ideas? Has anyone had success with cutting an ebay key? I just won an auction too.

This is what I found on another forum to on how to program the remote when I get the new key in.

1. Take the valet key, put it into the ignition and turn the key to the "on" position, just prior to starting the car.

2. Roll down the driver's side window (not required, but a good idea in case there's a problem).

3. Exit the car and close the door.

4. With a second key, physically lock the doors (don't use a remote).

5. Take the first remote to be programmed, press one of the buttons and the lights will flash once. Wait 10 seconds and press the unlock button. The doors should unlock. That first transmitter is now programmed.

6. Lock the door again (physically) with the key, (not the remote).

7. Press one of the buttons twice, the lights will flash twice. Wait 10 seconds and press the unlock button. The doors should unlock. The second transmitter is now programmed.

For a third transmitter press the button 3 times and for a fourth press 4 times.

Paul ads: "Make sure that to test the newly program remotes, the original key is removed from the ignition. Someone might be a bit frustrated trying to test it with it still in 'program' mode." - 2/6/2004

Found these guys in Georgetown, TX which is next to Austin. They can program and cut the key for $50. I might have to make a roadtrip down there once I replace my timing belt. Take a day off from work head down on a friday.

Default There are two parts to the programming.

The remote is two separate pieces, one part is the key + immobilizer and the second part is the remote.

Post 2001 cars may have immobilizers. To check see if after turning on the ignition a light with a key comes up on the display. If you have that happening your car has immobilizer and can only be programmed by the dealer.

I doubt an outside source can program the immobilizer but they can probably program the remote. You can also do this yourself. If your existing remote works you can program another remote with the correct FCC code.

My local dealer charges $66 for either a master key or the bottom part of the key.

Best advice I can give you is Google "VW Audi key programming class action lawsuit" You'll learn that you need a friend at the dealership.

Cool so the Dealers have to give me an independent shop according to your letter if I read it correctly. I found a guy in Huntsville today and he say she will be in Houston in a couple of weeks and can cut me one and program it. Wonder if he can do it with the immobilizer.
