Default Thoughts on overheating engine?

Starting yesterday, my air conditioner (in my 2000 A6 Quattro 4.2 ART) started putting out hot air (even when manually set to max cool). I checked the refrigerant level and all was fine. A couple of hours later I started the car and AC was working fine. But after a few miles of driving, the engine temperature warning indicator came up and the AC went hot again. I shut off the engine and waited for things to cool down. As I waited, I noticed a very mild burning smell coming into the cabin. I checked the G12 coolant reservoir and the V-belt and both look fine.

Anyone have any thoughts on what I should check next?

Default Do you have a vag com? If not, I do and i am in Vegas>

If you need help let me know. Even if the AC coolant is ok you still may have a compressor problem. If the clutch on the compressor is disengaging for some reason this may cause your problem. I'm no expert on AC but that's just what I have experienced in the past with other cars.

Default T-stat - yeh - could be that too. Serp belt slipping?

If the tensioner is weak it could cause the belt to slip, thus not driving the AC compressor and maybe causing the burning smell.?????

Default how hot was the gauge showing?

can you see if hot air is coming in with heater on?
if no hot air it means the impeller in the pump is broken
if hot air coming in and running hot usually thermostat stuck closed
it could be as easy as a bad temp sensor
VAG before anything

Another thing to keep in mind is that audi is smart enough to turn off the AC if your car is overheating.

most likely thermostat. commmon problem on 4.2 motor. thermostat part number probably ends in suffix C. updated ones are suffix D. and yes the a/c is deactivated when the engine is overheating as per previous poster. should probably replace tbelt, waterpump while there. Easiest way to check the thermostat is to feel the hose that is going to the thermostat. if the thermostat is stuck it will be cold.
