Default Should I be scared or feel lucky?

While working on the front end of the A6 I had a glance down the axle and lo and behold!

Yes, there are a few bolts missing.

Oh, and look what else I found...

So a slight delay in getting the CA's finished.

And I still REALLY hate pinch bolts. I'll update that one tomorrow.

They must have been left loose, or over tightened to the point that the have sheared off - certainly, in your photo it looks like there is the remains of the bolt in there?

The second photo - is the spring broken at the last coil?

Nope, nothing in there. Sorry for the crummy cell pic, but the holes are wide open. Wondering when it would have let go.

At first I thought the coil was just shifted in the seat, but when I pulled the strut out to take a closer look, it's clear it's missing the last bit of coil.

I had some vibration up front that I was addressing with the CA's and TRE's, maybe this had something to do with it too. I'm ordering the bolts this morning and a new spring too. Hopefully they won't take too long to come in.

Default I think the manual says to torque and use loctite if i remember correctly>>>

It's kind of hard to get a torque wrench on them. I think I had to use some long extensions and adaptors. Even then I torqued em twice in a cross pattern. It would be a real PITA to have one completely break loose. I imagine it would do a lot of damage, but I wouldn't want to find out. Lost an entire rear drive shaft once when the UV joints went out and that was one hell of a bang. Just glad it didn't kick up and go through someones windshield.

I've never used Loctite on them and I have never had one work loose but I doubt it would do any harm and would possible prevent the possibility of this happening at all.

To Torque them properly, you simply need a good long 1/2" extension. I put one short bolt in the brake disc/hub and then stick a screwdriver in the ventilation slot on the disc to stop it rotating. Always making sure you could each one as you torque them.

Default Maybe it was the guard thingies I was thinking about > >

It's been over a year since I did the transmission and there were so many bolts and crap it gets kind of jumbled up in my head especially since I have actually slept since then. I actually took pictures but lost them when my harddrive on my computer crashed ....so now I have to rely on my not so reliable other hard drive in my head .....let's hope it doesn't crash....I HAVE A GOOD MEMORY BUT IT'S A SHORT ONE ............aHAHAHAHHAHAA
