The *most* annoying power steering rack creak when steering from left to right
01 A6 2.7T 110k.
Stationary, when you steer the car from left to right the rack creaks as if one of the control arms or tie rod bushings is toast. This isn't the case. If I feel through the passenger side tie rod boot, the rack vibrates and creaks from the rack itself. From inside the car it sounds like you're you're opening and closing a realllly creaky old door with hinges that haven't been lubed in quite some time.
I just did a full flush of the ps fluid. No change. I used 11s.
thoughts? anyone had this? rack bad?

There is no play in the outer tierods, the only possible sources for the noise are 1. inner tierod 2. rack or 3. steering damper (which from what I understand, the system is not equipped with, unlike the older cars).

Play has nothing to do with creaking noise.
You have a wealth of experience on this board, and two people are telling you to replace the tie rods. You can argue, but the changes are close to 100% that the tie rods are the issue.
He says inner, I say outer. Replace the whole thing on both sides. $100 DIY plus alignment.

Assuming that your TREs and all that obvious BS are in good ...
shape, check the pinion to rack clearance adjustment on the rack unit. Not familiar with this on the A6 rack, but has solved the problem with 44 and 89 chassis racks.
