Engine misfiring, oil on spark plug electrode 99 A 6
after getting a cylinder 3 missfire code I pulled the spark plug and the electrode end is COVERED in oil. This is the only spark plug that is oily. The car doesn't perform as it used to and my gas mileage is down. I did some research and what I understand is that it could be worn/broken piston rings or leaking valve seals is this right? Can I replace the valve seals without taking the engine apart or should I just sell the car? There are 91K miles on it. Thanks guys!
Yes it "is" possible to change out a stem seal with the head on. It depends on how well the cylinder seals whether or not it will keep pressure to hold the valve up while doing it though.
Before getting too far into it you can try pressuriezing the cylinder and see if it holds and for how long. If you can get...~150 lbs in it for maybe 30 mins, you should be ok. You have to be able to counteract the pressure you need to place on the valve spring to compress it to remove it, then the seal and then reverse.
At 99K, sure keep it. If you like the car it should still have a lot of life left in it. You will be around the time that it will need some service though. If it hasn't already it'll be needing a TB and the front control arms ought to be pretty tired by now too. Mine has 119K on it and other than I am now seeing a tiny bit of rust at the bottom corner of the door, it's in great shape. of course the TB was done by the PO and I am now doing the front suspension. But for a while now it should keep me happy.
