Brakes, suspension, engine bay pieces, braces, motormounts, radiator, a virtual fortune involved to do it right. In otherwords, forget it. You'll drive yourself to drink.

But wait, that's not all....you must also remove the entire front end of the car (yes, the sheetmetal) as the A6 with 4.2 engine is longer and wider up front than the sheetmetal for the 2.8 and 2.7T models.

First, please post in the proper location. This thread is hard to follow.

Second, I would strongly recommend you get a diagnosis on the current engine before you buy anything. Done a leakdown test? Checked the timing belt? Pulled codes?

Third, replace the 2.8 only with a another engine that has the same code. If you want a 4.2, sell the 1999 and buy one.

Default WOW! Puddle caused engine to blow??? ........

That's got to be a first ..... sure it just didn't drench the electronics or pop some wires / connections somewhere? First place I would look would be under the cover where all the wire harnesses connect on the front driver side. If you hit a big enough puddle at fast enough speed chances are something got up in there......sounds like something electrical and not mechanical ...... engine blowing usually is something mechanical .... a puddle should definitely not cause mechanical failure inside the engine unless of course the entire engine was submerged for a long enough period of time .... the other things that may have been effected would be fuses /relays ..... but definitely worth doing a proper diagnosis ..... vag com and deligent examination of all electrical connections ...... some nice hot dry weather may be enough just to bake it out and get it to start.

It might have gulped some water and hydrolocked, but it's hard to say. It does not look like any diagnostic work was done.
