There were several production issues with the 2001 although I had one and they were not major for me. Consumer Reports rates it as a "don't buy" because of reliability. I'd avoid anything before 2002. For any TT in that era, find out if the timing belt kit has been replaced or you will be looking at about $1K in immediate service to replace it. Timing belt kit life is about 60K or 5 years, whichever comes first.

Consumer reports practically everything German as a "don't buy" because of poor reliability. I've found their ratings to be completely off for almost all topics they review... A 2002 is going to suffer most of the issues as the '01s. I can't recall any issue my '01 has had that doesn't plague later years.

Default I bought a 2001 5 years ago.

I have no regrets. TTs are a bit quirky, but there is a strong info base online to help one learn the solutions. Mine has been rewarding to own for the whole five years-- 70,000 miles that I have had it. I'm not looking forward to the day that I have to replace it. Hopefully it will be good for five more years.

My 2cents

Make sure they did the entire timing belt job including tensioner, water pump, thermostat and tensioner.

Check the cluster and the fuel senders.

The info display gradually fades away pixel by pixel and the temp and fuel gauges act up.

Fuel senders tend to get contaminated and give weird readings.

$$$ to replace.

Run a VAG.com to see if there are any pending CEL's.

Watch for rattly catalytic converter with that kind of mileage.
