was there a year to avoid when looking for a 4.2 (tranny probs?)
i am really scared off the 4.2 because of this . been reading post on having to redo the tranny for like 5g deff not worth it to get into a car that will have this kind of prob
any thoughts on this?
odds are the used car i find with me in the 100xxx miles/1600000km range

Not sure the model year changeover to the "new" tranny, but my 2002...
...has 85k miles on it, and the transmission is rock solid (knock on wood). I believe there were issues with the earlier 4.2's (2000 and 2001), and many issues with the C5 S6 because of the extra power, but I think once they intalled the newer transmission, the incidents dropped.
It is hard to gauge by simple replies in discussion forums, as most threads deal with problems and issues, and not a lack of problems and issues. I beleive there was a poll last year or earlier about 4.2 transmission problems. It was about 50/50 IIRC, and most of the problems appeared to be older (2000-2001) 4.2 models.

I heard 1999-2000 where the worst. Audi attended to the issue from 2001-04 so its less heard of in those years. It's also to those owners who are retarded and couldn't maintain thier trannies or cars at that matter who complained.
