I have a 2002 A6 3.0 Quattro with 210,000 miles on it. I was wondering what kind of MPG i should be getting... Currently, i drive about 70% city and the rest highways. My running average is around 15 MPG. On extended highway trips i get around 21-23 depending on how fast i am going. I dont drive with much of lead foot (unless i need to get somewhere fast). When i fill up and drive only city im lucky to get 250 miles to a tank (18 Gal). What may be the issue/issues?

i get almost the exact same as you with my "98 2.8Q... i think the 4.2's may get better mileage on average because with the bigger engine it is easier to pull the car, that being said it would take a very patient man to keep his foot of the accelerator . Now that it is warming up (i live in alberta canada) i am seeing about a 15ish percent increase in my mileage... I dont think there is much you can do to really improve it the car is old and it just doesnt run as efficiently as it used to. Im not very knowledgeable with cars in general but maybe the small things like fuel filter and air filter getting replaced could show some difference.
These cars have never had very good MPGs. For me, (2.7T), I'll get 23-24 MPG in highway driving (70MPH avg. speed), but with mixed city/highway driving that will go down to 18 MPG or so.
Great! I 'm between 16-19 commuting, but within tenths of you either way on a long highway stint. Commuting is such a crap shoot, doesn't take much to throw the average down the toilet.
I've had the same experience as GrapeKing, calculated manually (not by the optimistic dashboard computer) for 100k miles. If I drive 55-60, I see almost 25-26 mpg. But I never have the patience to drive that speed for long.
