Default beginner questions..

hi my name is Nick, I'm currently living in Phoenix, AZ going to school at UTI for automotive technology. I've been a muscle car guy for most of my life, but when I got need for speed shift for christmas, I bought and drove the RS4. I naturally got curious about it, and looked up wikipedia right away! I never really realized how much power audis made, and needless to say, I'm now hooked after listening to youtube exhaust videos...after I finish school in august, I plan to sell my current mustang and get something different. I'm now interested in an S4! is there anything I should be on the lookout for when I'm looking to buy? what milage the turbos fail is something I've seen in several threads so far. also, how hard is it to actually work on your own audi? I'm not a fan of paying labor and enjoy doing my own work. I'm mechanically inclined, and my roommate has access to the nearby airforce base, so I can use the car bays to work.

thanks for reading my long post!

also, out of curiosity, what wheels are on this S4?

You'll be able to work on them no problem. You just need some special tools here and there and you'll end up pulling the engine for some things, but it's no big deal with a shop manual from bentley and this forum and the QW forum guys to help out.

Turbos can go at any time. Some are running stock turbos at well over 200K on the odometer. They're likely to go sooner if the car is chipped. But you should be looking for a car on the market that is already at least stage 3 with upgraded turbos. There's no sense in buying stock since you'll be wanting to do the upgrades anyway.

Good luck!

how much do that many upgrades effect the everyday driveability of the car? in my experience with V8s, they tend to go downhill from the time you start modding...how do the audis react? and when I'm shopping, should I just be on the lookout for cars that already have rebuilt turbos then?
