I saw where someone relocated it towards the firewall out from under the IM for easier future replacement. Maybe think about that? I've also seen where guys say they have done it without removing the IM. If you do move the IM, you'll want new gaskets and you'll want to make absolutely sure nothing falls in the holes while you're working.

Consider dropping 100 bucks on some phenolic spacers while you've got the intake manifold off. I'm about to do this myself but I've had the mani removed before - it's a bit of work but nothing too serious.

Be careful with your fuel lines as they will leak a bit. Don't go around smoking a cigarrette or anything like that. Also, stuff some clean rags or balled up newspaper into all of the openings: the intake valve holes and turbo inlet pipe connection (where it meets the y-pipe ends).

And buy a IM stud kit while your in there. It's like 30$ or something from WMS.

2nd - alcohol and machinery don't mix. Crack and machinery, however...

And don't even think about trying to extract the pump without removing the intake manifold unless you have the hands of a 12 year old girl. I tried it that way to save some time and ended up curled in a ball in the corner of my garage crying and pissing myself.

How big are your hands? I fit an L size glove and I was able to do it without taking off the intake manifold. The hardest part was connecting the new hoses once you the the thing back in there.

These are all helpful. But I would be ecstatic if I could change the pump without removing the manni. Did you use a certain type of hose clamp? I can't imagine getting in there with anything other than a skinny vice-grips type of wrench

What helped the most was a set of long handled or long reach pliers that I got from the local chain auto store. They look like these pliers, the middle one with the angled head helped to get the OEM clamps off. Once you do that it's easy.
