01 S4 heat won't work
I have a 2001 S4 and the heat won't work. I noticed also that whenever I turn the heat on it omits a smell of something burning. A mechanic has told me that it needs a thermostat and the bumper has to be removed in order to install it? Does that sound right? I was thinking it was a heater core. What does everyone think?

Thermostat would be more likely and probably cheaper to replace. If it's messed up then it would never open up to let the hot coolant get to the heater core.
You could get access to the heater core and the feel the hoses leading to and from the core to see if they get hot when the car is warmed up. If they stay cold then there is no hot coolant getting to the core.

Removing the bumper isn't that bad. You just pry the sides off with a long screwdriver (there's an access port in the inner fender) and then only 2 screws hold it on. Takes about 30mins once you've done it a few times.
If you've got a decent amount of miles on the timing belt it'd be a good time to change it while you're in there.
