So, how tough are these Haldex units?
First time posting from a first time TT owner. I bought a '03 TT Quattro from my bank off their repo auction. It was a steal of a price, and I knew I would need to put some bucks into the car. They had the car checked out, put in new brakes and a dash module for malfunctioning fuel gauge at their cost. It had good service records from the local dealer too. I replaced the timing belt and water pump at 65k, based on feedback from here.
I've been drivng the car all summer with no problems until last week. The rear end started clicking when I reversed, so I thought I had better do the Haldex fluid change. When I pulled the drain plug out, I got about 4 drips from the Haldex unit. Some bonehead had left out the gasket, so all of the fluid had slowly dripped out.
It will be snowing here in CO soon, so I'll find out soon enough if the Haldex is toast. I've read about the driving in circle test, but I think I'll wait for the first snow to give it a real-life test. Are the Haldex units tough enough to run with no fluid, or is it time to start looking for a used Haldex from a junkyard? I suppose the next test is get the cable and VAG software to see what error codes come up?
