Default 02 Roadster - ESP and ABS Error Lights

Twice, my ESP and ABS Lights came on (at the same time) and stayed on until I stopped, turned off the vehicle and restarted. At that point, the lights stayed off for the remainder of the drive.

I took it to the dealership and although I'm told a historical record of codes is saved in the car computer, the lights being on did not generate any codes.

So, I asked these questions (with answers in quotes):

1. Is the vehicle safe to drive? "Yes and your ABS brakes work as long as the lights are off. When on, I have brakes but not anti-lock brakes."

2. What do I do now? "Try to catch when the light comes on. Did it occur around a sharp turn as that may cause the sensor to kick off. If possible, bring it in when the lights are on."

3. Is this indicative a failing instrument cluster? "Potentially."

--

I don't feel these are solid answers to the error lights problem.

Anybody have experience with this? Is this vehicle unsafe to drive?

Thanks for your help!

I have a similar problem with my 2001. The lights will come on while driving, sometimes over a bump but some times without. The lights will reset (be off) next time the car is started. Is there a known problem and/or an easy fix?

Default ABS Module

My dealer stated this exact problem is a faulty ABS module - $800 used part, $1200 new (includes labor).

They attempted to reset hoping the lights would not return but they did.

Fortunate for me, the dealer offered to pay half of the cost because I just bought it from him 5 weeks ago (my wife wanting to trade her 09 A5 in for an 2011 S5 might have something to do with it too).

A fellow from Audiforums.com (a site that both Changoo and I visit) stated Modulemaster.com can repair ABS modules for a fraction of the cost. I awaiting details on this and will relay if I get anything.

My service department is changing their story. They are adamant I buy new and new is $1300 without labor. $1600! Their reasoning is they would not buy used on a part like this.

Modulemaster.com specializes in ABS modules so I'm going to give that a try. I don't think I'm up to the task for bleeding brakes (the hydraulic unit unfortunately has to be taken off to get to the ABS module) so I will likely have my dealer work on that. They charge $100 for the repair + some other added expenses totaling under $150.

My ESP/ABS light is coming on, still goes off after a restart but is returning quickly.

By the way, Modulemaster also repairs the instrument cluster panel (including the center pixel display) for around $300.

Changoo ... I had a similar prb with my 2002 TT coupe ... took it to my local mechanic (not Audi) who happens to own a couple of TT & knows them inside out ... ended up replacing a front left wheel speed sensor ... because the speed sensor went bad, it could not feed data to the ESP & ABS, so the failure lights came on ... couple hundred bucks as I recall ... but haven't had the problem since ... happened about 4 months ago with around 113K miles on the vehicle ... just thought I'd share ... :-)
