Audi a8 3G mmi retrofit

Has anyone performed an mmi 3G retrofit? I have a 07 model and would like the 3G system instead. Where is everyone buying parts? What are the programming changes required on vag?

It will probably get you an idea of what is needed. With the limited knowledge I have, a new center console control, main brain unit and nav drive will be needed. The MMI also controls HVAC, seats, AMI/iPod/CD Changer, rear view camera, ambient lights, TPMS, and on and on and on, so I am not sure the current modules will connect to the newer 3G.

You have your work cut out for you, but it will be interesting to see your results if you decide to plunge into it.

"craigyb" on tyresmoke.net has successfully completed several D3 MMI 2G to 3G conversions though I believe all were on UK models (which may or may not make a difference). He seems to have a buiness in the UK specializing in system retrofits for various Audi models.

The 3G retrofit is AMAZINGLY hard and $$$$ expensive. Definitely not worth it, even craigy said he would never do it again after what he had to change out (just about everything, along with tons of recoding and programming). You weren't the first person who has done it, I only know of one person (craigy) that has completed it in an A8.

I am not afraid of the challenge doing this upgrade. I asked cragyb and he couldn't help me at all since he is in UK. What I am not familiar with at this moment is programming Audi vehicles like I know how to program Mercedes vehicles.

For our A8's we use the Ross-Tech VAGCOM cable HEX+CAN http://store.ross-tech.com/shop/VCHUC.html. VCDS software I have found to be very complete, but I have not ventured into any deep programming with it.

Coming from the MB crowd where STAR systems cost an arm an a leg, and even a hacked one costs upwards of $1500, this is a bargain and works well for most of us.
