Default Transmission!! 95 quattro 90

I thought I would bring this from the 100 forum to the 90 to see if I can get any insight.

https://www.audiworld.com/forums/sho....php?t=2813181

I have the same issue. Mine is a 5 speed and in reverse it makes some serious grinding noises and the "death clunk"

I am also having large amounts of what I believe to be transmission fluid spewing all over my cat. I was wondering if it may be related to old fluid. My car has been sitting for 2 years (I just bought it). It does drive fine besides the reverse issue and loosing fluid(I am not driving it however in light of the fluid issue). Also, when in neutral and the clutch is not depressed I hear grinding. Do you have the same symptom? Sorry I can't give you a solution but two heads is better than one.

standards do not have transmission fluid, they have gear oil which is 75-90 and won't spew, it's way too thick. Are you sure it's not engine oil because if so it could be your rear main seal.
Check the inner front drive shafts as well for leakage, if you lost enough fluid and your transmission is dry it's possible you stripped the gear for reverse.

Just a note, if you do have red fluid spraying then it sounds like somebody put ATF in your gear box and if so then your transmission is most likely shot.

I am aware that the trans uses heavy weight oil. The car is leaking oil, but I do not believe that it is the main seal because of the location of the leak is so far back. Also, I just spent a solid 5 hours under the car replacing the starter and it didn't seam to have any oil leak issues up front.

I suspect that it is the trans as I am also having symptoms with reverse. If it is low, and I put fluid in it could reverse be salvaged? Also, by inner front drive shafts are you referring the where the cv axles meet up to the trans? Could it also be the rear drive shaft seal?

5 hours to replace the starter?
Yikes!
Took me an hour.
Support the motor, take out the passenger side motor mount, and you've got the room to pull it.
It's only two bolts plus the battery cable.
The top bolt can be reached from the top and the bottom from the bottom.

Yeah, the rear bolt on the starter is what took the longest it was very tight ans somewhat corroded on.

Well I determined the source of the leak... A very large crack in my transmission on the left side towards the top above the cats.

I may just part this car out if I have to pull the transmission. Has anyone else heard of a similar crack?

I've heard of FWD VWs self-machining and spewing gear oil but never the Audis.

If you're parting out, I need a climatronic heater box with working flaps OTC...oh, and an EGR temp sensor, the wire on mine is broken, might be the source of my EGR CEL.

The transmission housing is aluminum and rarely cracks unless subjected to some impact, extreme temperature or undue stress. I can't say I've ever seen a case with a crack to the point it's leaking gear oil.

Well, I am entertaining the possibility of patching this with some JB weld. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Is there an easy way to acess the top of the trans from inside the car?

I should also add that the crack is approximately 5mm wide!

It may even be easier to cut a hole above the trans rather than pulling it. If it means I can fix it and not part it out I may be willing to do it.

The trans runs in the firewall, you would need to cut your floorboards out to gain access to the top, not a good idea.
Even if you do fix the leak you said your R is grinding so you have a broken gear and it's only going to get worse.
Rather hard to drive if you have no reverse.

You might be better off just grabbing a used one from a yard which is not damaged and replacing it.

hard to say if the crack and loss of lube caused it or a PO was driving it at freeway speed and put it in reverse but it sounds like it has internal damage.

If the rest of the car is in good shape to the point you feel you can inject money to make it work go for it, otherwise you need to judge if the cost is worth it to you to fix or scrap.

I dropped a couple K this year to updated/fix issues with mine because I like it, I have replaced too many items to get a fraction of my money back selling it and I know it's history with paperwork since day one.
