Default Cq fuel mileage check

Too many variables to make a good comparison with other checks I've recorded. Doing a proper check takes more discipline than I had today. Maintained 100kph on the highway, about seven hours driving including forty-five minutes on surface streets in the cities.

Kingston > Toronto 18.8 ltr. 279 km. 6.7 ltr/100 km
Toronto > Kingston 18.9 ltr. 246 km. 7.7 ltr/100 km

Trip totals:
525 km
326.2 miles
7.2 ltr/100 km;
39.2 miles per gallon (Imperial);
32.7 miles per gallon (US)

Notes:

As previously, except:
- Attempted to improve the 20v's MAF entry velocity-stack mounting, closer towards my 12v config:

- I'm trialing a different MAF, a very simple 4-wire to 4-wire conversion (anybody else tried this?):

http://translate.google.com/translat...26prmd%3Dimvns

- a mix of fuel brands and octane 91 - 94
- tires need some air
- need an alignment
- 15°C dropping to 5°C / 59°F to 41°F, no wind

I've never gotten anywhere near 30mpg. My best is 26.5 cruising 65 on the highway with no interuptions. I've been tracking the car via fuelly since I bought it.

Default Glad to hear of 31 mpg @ 65-70 mph avg...

as it confirms my result neighbourhood, and it does mean I've also got room to improve. The reasons I want to occasionally do an easily repeatable peak highway fuel consumption check with as few variables/interruptions as possible are:

- bragging rights to be sure;
- to see what the car capable of;
- as a periodic maintenance check it confirms good all-round operating conditions; &
- as a performance check after a modification to note possible changes.

I don't recall what the EPA highway drive cycle consisted of in 1989, but as their rating was 24 mpg (see: http://20v.org/90brocq1.jpg), if you are seeing that, perhaps that's normal, but know that better can be had.

That fuelly site is neat. Doing exactly that kind of regular data entry (in a plain log book mind you) has had me catch a fuel leak just by looking at all the numbers.

It is satisfying, twenty-two years on, to be driving a fairly depreciated car with over half a million kilometers on the clock, that is such a fun car to drive; and that can get this kind of fuel mileage. My idea of what is a smart car should be.

Overall I've been pretty happy with what fuel economy I've been able to pull out of the car, but if 30 is attainable I know something isn't as good as it can be. Not sure what else I can do at the moment though. Car has fresh plugs and I change the oil frequently. New timing belt and water pump were installed in the last 10k.

I've purchased one of the belly pans, but haven't had a chance to install it in the last couple weeks. I'm expecting some gain there, but don't know how much. I haven't replaced the wires or cap/rotor, so that may be a place to improve. Also replacing the fuel injectors with the 034 kit is supposed to help as well.

Those are the only places I've thought of that could help. Can't do much better with driving habits than setting the cruise at 65 and that only netted me 26.5 mpg.

I've been using Fuelly for a year and a half and really like it. Previously I was writing the mileage on the receipt and every couple of months entering it into a spreadsheet. It seemed like I was always missing a receipt or two every time I went to enter the data. It is much more convenient to use my phone to enter it at the station. It can be done via text or web, so it doesn't require a smart phone.
