Trying to diagnose a '93 Audi 90 Quattro; clutch, or transfer case, or something else
I'm a Volvo home mechanic attempting to help a friend diagnose a problem. 1993 Audi 90 Quattro CS. The car will not move under its own power; the clutch pedal feels fine. The gear shifter moves smoothly in and out of all positions. The car was driving fine and then just stopped; engine is fine, no stall, no noticeable noises, just no power at the wheels. The symptoms seem very similar to ones listed in a some threads here where the most likely answer was a failed transfer case.
The wrench in the works is this - my friend says that the gear shifter will also move through the gears without the clutch pedal depressed. Nobody mentioned this condition in any posts I have found. My admittedly limited experience with clutches (most Volvos are automatics) has been that a broken clutch prevents you from shifting into any gear. Is there any situation where the clutch could fail with the clutch plate off the flywheel? If not the clutch, is the transfer case the only/most likely other possibility? If anybody has any thoughts on this, I'd be very grateful.

Hope they help.
But there is NO way I could see anything like the above happening in a hydraulic system.
The guy could have lost a connecting pin in his shift linkage. Now THAT would allow him to move the shift lever through all the "gears," while not actually engaging any.
Or, he could be off his rocker with the shifting thing, and it's just a bad CV joint. (I like this answer the best)
