Default What is your A6 break in style?

Hi,
Should be hearing from my dealer this week about my new A6 arrival but have been going through threads on S4/A4 models and noticed the following thread:

- Many threads about not following Audi guidelines during break in period by keeping rpm less than 4k, it seems some folks have not followed this recommendation and actually have not seen increased oil consumption in future.

I just wanted to know from folks who got new A6 what do they follow?

a- Do you follow recommendations for first 1000 miles by keeping away from red rpm area?

b- Do you push car in red rpm (for 1 sec or 2).

Basically what is your driving style during breakin period?

Thanks!!

Slap in neutral and place a brick on the accelerator for an hour. Just Kidding.
Good Question. I'm curious as well.

I've read the threads and heard/respect all the theories... but honestly I trust Audi's own procedures over those I read on the internet. After all, they are the ones designing and manufacturing the cars. I went w/ the guidelines in the manual.

Hi,
I agree with replies so far about following Audi guidelines the threads I saw on S4 were mainly:

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm
https://www.audiworld.com/forums/sho....php?t=2819945

But I do not see that officially supported by Audi hence will not follow.

Thanks.

In order to seat the piston ring properly, the rings should be break in and shape slowly. Running an new engine to red line will shape the ring quickly. but not accurately. Its like wood sculpting or milling steel engine parts, you do not want to chip away big chunks, you want to work it down slowly.

my car was delivered with 19 km in the odo and i drove nicely until 35 km but it's already driven hard on the factory on dyno and even some higher end cars are driven on race tracks for quality control purposes so i think this subject is like warming up idle for a minute is good but idle for 5 minutes won't blow the engine it's about what you think is right

the hard break in was done by some (i don't know how many) of the users on the A4 and S4 forum and they didn't report any failures and it was discussed that too easy break in could cause oil consumption problems

in the S4 forum they discussed that heavy break in wasn't recommended by audi to avoid law suits from some idiots who rev their engine cold

so bottom line do it the way you feel it's right but if you go with hard one never beat an engine when it's cold and don't rely on water temp gauge

I saw this as well but it came across to me as pure speculation. These lawsuits could be avoided by a simple sentence in the break-in section of the manual.

Audi is trying hard to fix the oil consumption issues it has faced, and I find it hard to believe they would suggest a break-in procedure that would exacerbate the problem. If varied/hard driving were the better way to break in these cars, they could have simply stated: "Break in - Drive the car normally; however, do not put the engine under load for extended periods of time, and do not cross 3,000 rpm before the engine has warmed up."
