Default What should I do, turbo not bad, waste gate jammed open because of loose nut .

My 2.7 had a problem. Looked like nut on exhaust flange loosened and jammed open the waste gate. So I do not need to replace the turbos . the turbos have 80K on them and appear to be fine other wise. I have order a set of turbos to replace what we thought were bad, but now it appears that I do not need to do so.
I want to keep the car for anther 50k miles and I do not dog it much. The engine works fine, no oil burning problems, >6K per qt of oil. What is the general opinion on the turbos, good for anther 50Kmi or just bite the bullet and replace them now?
Thanks in advance for any opinions.

80k is really low miles for those turbos. if you have been taking good care of them then just get them fixed. save your money for when you will actually need it. there are people in the s4 with 250k on originals. if all you want is 130k on those turbos i think it can be done. keep using proper oil and warming techniques. if you have a doubt about the turbos check your intercooler hoses for bunch of oil. small amounts are OK

did you get the waste gauge fixed?

Default Been babying the car, take good care of it.

I will be looking at the car at lunch today. Their thought is that the waste gate is fine. The nut loosened up and jammed the waster gate open. I will check on the oil in the lines to see what is going on. If little oil is present then I will just keep the car as is and do some other stuff. Need to keep car for 30-40K mi more till kids are out of school.

Thanks for your input.

Repair the waste gate issue and keep the car for another 30-40K. About the only serious expense you will have in that time is the timing belt service and maybe a couple of upper control arms and CVJ boots.

Pay attention to those boots on the front...check for grease on the wheel rims inside the wheel.

Default Thanks for the suggestions! I have done/found many of these.

I had to smile when you said check loose nuts, control arms, grease inside the wheels. Forgot to mention valve cover gaskets and a few others.

The loose nut came from the dealer when they replaced the pressure plate release bearing, and clutch plate when the release bearing shed some small metal fragments that went in to the self adjusting clutch, jamming it to the fully worn out position. The new mechanic showed me the 4 nuts (3 old and one new) for the turbo to exhaust flange and the one old nut jammed in the waste gate control rod. Looks like the dealer mechanic lost a nut when he was reassembling the tranny and such.

Over the past year or so I have replaced both outside cv joint boots. The CV joints appeared in good condition.

Do the control arms. That is my plan for this summer. Get the kit and replace them all. They just started creaking in the cold weather.

Timing belt, did that at 81K so may not need to do that again.

Replace the cam plugs. They were leaking.

Getting the cam seals replaced.

Getting the motor mounts and tranny mounts replaced. May cure the mystery grumble when making tight slow turn. (CV joints are fine.)

Window plastic clips, when friend let his laptop strap get caught in the window.

Shall I go on....

I really do like this car, had it since new, but damn.

Thanks for the perspective. Thanks for the help.
