I wouldn't say you're way off base, but you are asking a premium price. I just paid $4800 for a '99 with similar mileage, and I felt that was too much, but I really wanted the car. I believe you are overlooking two of the basic rules of used car sales: #1. Never expect to recoup the cost of repairs you have made. It may be a selling point if your customer is looking at two similar cars, but sorry , you just don't get that money back. In fact it may cause them to be suspcious that you are selling the car so soon after investing that much money in it. It could mean the repairs were not done properly? #2. Consumers will expect a private party sale to be at least $1,000 less than book value. After all, a dealer has expenses he needs to cover, like rent, advertising, detailing, etc. plus he needs to make a few hundred bucks profit on every unit he sells just so he can eat. You on the other hand, just need to get that car out of your driveway, so in essence the buyer is doing you a favor. That said, anyone who offers you less than half what you're asking is being pretty rude, no matter how deluded he feels your asking price is. And anyone who offers $900 is just being an ***.
